Home Educators

Need a little help?

Are you a home educating parent who is looking for some professional support with English or maths tuition? Would your child benefit from learning with other home educated children in a friendly, relaxed environment? Could you do with some time to yourself during the week?! Whatever your reasons for seeking additional support with your child's education, Flying Start can help.

Flying Start Tuition was founded in 2009 by Sian Goodspeed, an experienced teacher and home educating mother, who understands that there are as many reasons families choose to home educate as there are children who are home educated. This is why Flying Start's courses are planned and designed around the children in each group, taking into consideration their individual learning styles and uniqueness. Using a range of traditional and modern teaching methods, technology and techniques from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Flying Start's courses will boost your child's confidence and assist them in becoming an effective lifelong learner.

Course format

Courses run each week during term-time, in small group sessions lasting 90 minutes. During this time, children undertake a range of activities, including student-led, teacher-guided, collaborative and independent work which may involve puzzles, computer tasks, games and worksheets. For students undertaking exam courses, such as 11+ and GCSE preparation, the relevant syllabus will be followed and there will be plenty of opportunity to develop exam techniques.

Our approach

Groups are mixed age and ability, with appropriate support and guidance given to enable children to develop at a pace appropriate to their individual needs. Students are encouraged to work together and support each other and to take initiative in their own learning. Without the restrictions of the National Curriculum, teachers are able to act as facilitators rather than leaders and children are encouraged to further develop their interests and strengths as well as working on their weaker areas.

Resources

Lessons take place at our well-resourced tuition centre in Chesham, where we have fantastic facilities, including a range of technology, such as laptops, iPads and interactive whiteboards. A range of games, puzzles, workbooks and other activities will be used during the lessons, which are planned with an emphasis on fun!

Each session is led by one of our friendly and experienced tutors. All our staff are fully DBS (formerly CRB) checked so you can be sure your child is in safe hands.
