Empowering Learning: Help your child to learn and focus better fast

Posted on March 10th, 2017

Does your child struggle with literacy and numeracy? Does he or she have problems focusing or paying attention at school? Does he or she have dyslexia, ADHD or other forms of learning difficulties?

Don’t despair. Children learn in different ways and some children respond better to visual learning techniques, often not used at school.

At Flying Start, we are very excited to be teaming up with Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) and Empowering Learning expert Dorothy Combes (see photograph on right) to help children to read, spell and do maths using visual learning techniques.

The Empowering Learning programme has been very successful in helping children with learning difficulties including dyslexia; ADHD; dyscalculia and dyspraxia.

Dorothy will also be overseeing and supporting the NLP techniques we already offer as part of our learning programme. To find out more about NLP and how we’re already using this technique – click here

What is Empowering Learning?

Empowering Learning is one of a few training programmes offered under the International Association of Health and Learning to help children (and adults) with learning difficulties through visual learning techniques.

How does the programme work?

Your child will be offered three one-to-one sessions of about an hour each with Dorothy.  The first session will be up to 1.5 hours and you are welcome to stay.

The focus of the first session will be to understand your child’s particular issues and to assess if and how they already use visual skills.  After the first session your child will be able to get into an effective learning state. He or she will get a workbook for the next session. Your child will first learn to use visual skills to spell and read and then the focus will move onto numbers. The sessions are designed to be lots of fun and are tailored for each child because every child learns differently.

 How does my child benefit?

  • If your child has been struggling to concentrate, the sessions will enable him or her to get into an effective learning state.
  • Your child will learn new methods to spell, read and learn times tables.
  • Your child will develop new learning skills and will be better able to retain concepts they learn.

What is Dorothy’s background?

Dorothy is a licensed NLP Practitioner. She is also a trained Empowering Learning practitioner, a programme, developed by Olive Hickmott, which also operates on an NLP foundation.  Dorothy trained under Ms Hickmott.

How will Flying Start ad Empowering Learning work together?

At Flying Start we already embed NLP techniques in the lessons. As the centre’s Empowering Learning coordinator, Dorothy will support our tutors to ensure a truly integrated approach.  If your child appears to have difficulties, he or she could be assessed to see if they might benefit from the Empowering Learning Programme, if you agree. We would then offer your child three one-to-one sessions.

Dorothy’s story: Why I became an Empowering Learning consultant

What’s wrong with her? That’s a question I found myself asking as I walked away from yet another parent consultation.  It was the second year in a row that I’d been told my Year 4 daughter had issues with literacy, numeracy and what the previous teacher had described as ‘focus and attention’. Yes, she did struggle to carry out any parental instruction that involved more than two tasks, for example brush your teeth and comb your hair.  Wasn’t that normal at her age?  And ok, has a terrible attention span on anything that doesn’t involve Minecraft or something online…..

 My Eureka moment

And that was the Eureka moment.  As I realised that she does apply focus and attention - for hours on end on something she loves, it dawned on me that perhaps there wasn’t something wrong with her at all. As a Neuro-Linguistic Programming Practitioner (NLP is a method of changing the way of controlling and changing the way our brain responds to things), I was aware that we all have different preferences in the way we filter and store information. Some of us have a visual preference; some kinaesthetic (feeling) and others auditory.  Most of us have our own blend.

So, what if my daughter has a strongly visual preference?  Would that explain why she’s never really gelled with phonics? And so embarked a journey that led me to Empowering Learning which is fast and unbelievably easy way of helping children (and adults) develop literacy and numeracy skills and teach them how to get into the right state of mind to be able to learn in the first place.

Relief on parents’ faces

Seeing the difference the three sessions made to my daughter, I am still in utter wonder as to why everyone doesn’t already know this.  So I studied it myself and became a practitioner.  It’s so wonderful to help other children and see the relief on parents’ faces. As it happens, my daughter turned out to be Dyslexic.  And guess what - most children with Dyslexia; Dyspraxia; Dyscalculia and ADHD have highly developed visual skills.  I would bet that most of them don’t know how to use these skills to full effect.

If my story resonates with you, I hope my story gives you comfort that there is help out there.
