In 2009, Flying Start was awarded a contract to provide tuition for a pioneering charitable project, now known as 'Tuition Plus', originated and funded by the Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust. The tuition, which is free to resident children in year five, was organised in response to research that found children from lower income families, whose parents may not be able to afford private tuition, were considerably disadvantaged when taking the Eleven Plus. Equality of access to education is an issue that Sian and her team are very passionate about and they are proud to be working with the Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust on such a ground-breaking project.
Initially, the aim of the tuition was to prepare children for the Eleven Plus but, as time has gone on, the project has adapted and evolved. The sessions now aim to give pupils an all-round boost in their core skills and confidence, with additional preparation for the Eleven Plus tests at a level appropriate for the individual children.
The project has continued to grow, with pupil intake exceeding forty each year. The project has benefited the participants in many ways and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
