Flying Start Tuition was established by Sian Goodspeed in 2008, following the birth of her first daughter, Charlotte. Having returned to teaching after her maternity leave, Sian found combining motherhood and school life too much of a juggling act and decided to make a career move. She wanted a job that would better combine her love of teaching with her family life and so Flying Start Tuition was born.
Initially, Sian tutored out of a small room at the back of her house but before too long, with demand for her services rocketing, Sian took on another tutor and moved to an intermediate venue. At the heart of Sian's approach has always been the desire to build pupils' confidence and to help them to realise what they are capable of achieving. This approach is central to the Flying Start ethos.
In 2009, Flying Start was awarded a contract to provide tuition for a pioneering charitable project, now known as 'Tuition Plus', originated and funded by the Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust. For more about this unique project, please read the Tuition Plus Project page. The company continued to go from strength to strength and moved to a larger venue.
Early in 2011, Flying Start became a limited company and later that year Sian won the West Herts' Entrepreneur of the Year award.
Also in 2011, Sian was commissioned to write a verbal reasoning technique and practice book for Schofield and Sims, and in 2012 her first book, Understanding Reasoning - Verbal Reasoning was published. This was followed by a series of six verbal reasoning workbooks, 'Rapid Reasoning Tests' aimed at children aged seven to twelve, published in 2014.
In 2013, Flying Start moved to their current fully-resourced tuition centre in central Chesham, which houses a wonderful team of dedicated staff, including tutors, teaching assistants and administrators - all trained the Flying Start way. The company continues to grow and has two satellite centres in Little Chalfont and Aylesbury with plans for more in the future.
Since its inception in 2008, Flying Start has successfully guided hundreds of children (and their parents!) through key exams such as the Eleven Plus, as well as helping many more to improve their literacy and maths skills.
